Marble has a rich palette of beautiful colors and is perfect
almost anywhere in the house, especially fireplaces,
bathrooms, and floors. Marble comes in many colors from
white to beiges to browns, reds and greens.
Marbles are
formed from limestone that has undergone intense heat and
pressure to turn into a crystalline structure. This change
takes place when temperatures in excess of 1800ºF are
generated by the weight of overlying material, pressure from
earth movements and heat from the earth’s core. True marbles
are generally white or whitish, sometimes translucent, with
some veining or color provided by other minerals present
during the process.
Brecciated marbles are stones which have been
broken up by earth movement and re-cemented with
various dissolved minerals resulting in the
characteristic "broken" appearance.
Green marbles include the "jades" from Taiwan,
and the very hard Verde Antique from Vermont.
Because they are chemically more closely related to
mantle rocks, they less susceptible to etching and
tend to be harder than other stones.
