Granite is the hardest and densest of the commercial
stones. It is a popular natural stone ideal on
kitchen countertops. A broad range of elegant
patterns makes granite the most durable and
minimal-maintenance application of stone.
Granites are composed of quartz, feldspars and
micas. Trace minerals contribute to the color and
texture of the various granites. Crystal size is
determined by the rate at which the granite cools:
the slower the cooling process, the larger the
crystals grow. Sometimes, you might see a big dark
or contrasting area in a piece of granite. This is
not a flaw, but most likely a xenolith, a piece of
the rock naturally found in its region that makes
the stone stand out.
Honed granite has a softer, less formal look.
Flamed granite which has a deeply textured surface
is ideal for use outside and can also be used for
dramatic effect as an accent material in a polished
granite floor.
